Happy Birthday Stefanie!
On the 21st of April our Cosmic Ray Engineer, Stefanie Strachan, celebrated her birthday at SANAE. As per the tradition, the festivities took place around lunch time on a curiously warm day. The wind was below 10 kts and there was a light snowfall the night before.
The eager team of diggers consisted of Johan, Mcabango and yours truly. Vincent was the brewmaster and Jako, Braam and Elrich were the photographers.

Here is how a typical snow bath ceremony plays out...
Step1: The diggers prepare a bath-tub sized hole
Step 2: The person celebrating his/her birthday runs down the stairs in their birhtday suit and gets into the hole.
Step 3: The subject is buried and the brewmaster offers them a drink. Singing commenses and goes on until a certain level of discomfort is achieved.
Step 4: Try and breath normally. Finish your drink!
Step 5: Tell the whole world that living in Antarctica is not for pussies!

A welcome return to blogging Jonnie. If I may be so bold as to say LONG overdue. Do we have Terry to thank for that? It looks so cold for Steph that I had to put on a jersey, just in case. To say that she was glowing in the last photo would be an understatement. Happy Birthday, Steph! I trust the guys spoiled you rotten after that.

Wow, that must be so freezing cold, please wish Stef happy happy birthday from me.
I would hate to have my birthday there! I hope she survived and that you fed her a lot of alcohol thereafter to recover!

I endorse Mike 58's comments !. Welcome return to blogging ! Thought you had been stricken with writers freeze, (or whatever they call it in Antarctica) but glad to see that not the case. Belated best birthday wishes to Stephanie. From someone who loaths a cold shower in SA summer her level of participation in traditional goings on is highly impressive. Hope the guys ensured her birthday was memorable for other more fashionable reasons also. All the best to you all !
